This is the first of a series of short story posts describing the world and people both in and around Atlantis, related to the "Meet the Characters" series.

Storyweaver
There she weaves by night and day A magic web with colours gay. She has heard a whisper say, A curse is on her if she stay
--Tennyson, The Lady of Shalott
She wandered the known world. Few knew her name, most of whom had passed on to the next world. Everyone simply called her “Storyweaver.” She was one of the fortunate few who had escaped the horrors of Atlantis' destruction. Her tales enchanted all, and upon hearing them, most people found themselves willing to part with a few coins, enabling her to buy food.
The sea winds called to her, and she never stayed in one place for very long. Her past life in that doomed city remained a mystery. One day, a boy in the kingdom of Ker-Ys felt bold enough to ask her about it. He was Corentin, the son of the queen.
The elderly lady smiled kindly upon him. “I was young once, and beautiful” she recalled, stroking her long, silvery hair, “and in love with a Persian tailor. He had fled to Atlantis because of the troubles in the east. That was before the dark ships appeared on the horizon. You know about those?”
“To be sure,” the lad answered gravely.
“Everyone said he was a spy and couldn't be trusted, but I knew at heart he was a good man.”
“What happened?” Corentin asked, wide-eyed.
Storyweaver's reminiscing smile faded. “The same thing that happened to all who lived and dreamed in Atlantis. The sea swallowed him up in a single night.”
