Lots of challenges floating around cyberspace these days!
An Indie authoress of my acquaintance, Madhuri Blaylock (see the link to her blog below), posted a challenge that intrigued me. The challenge calls for writers to go to page 7 of their WIP, count down 7 lines, and then share the next 7 lines.
So!
Without further ado, here's my answer:
They had kept Finn alive. Why?
Of course—it made perfect sense for raiders to use their strongest prisoners to propel their galleys. That was what the Romans did. But what had happened to the other passengers? Were Ptah's tales of cannibalism true? Finn shuddered, and pushed those thoughts out of his mind.
He looked to his side and saw he was chained together with Ptah, who had also been dealt a blow to the head, and hadn't regained consciousness.
“Lieutenant,” he nudged him, “Are you alright?”
Ptah slowly opened his eyes and came around. “We're prisoners,” he hissed.
“Rower slaves, to be more accurate. If these people are anything like the Romans, we're in for a miserable remainder of our lives.”
“We're not finished yet. We'll escape.”
Finn shook his head, and pointed to the chains holding them on the bench. “No one ever escapes the galleys.”
“We'll be the first,” Ptah vowed.
