Of the more than 200 sites on earth claiming to be the location of Atlantis, Santorini (known as Thera in antiquity) is believed by many to be the most likely candidate. This is due to the ancient volcanic eruption that occurred sometime between 2000-1500 B.C., which was one of the largest eruptions in recorded history--second only to Mount Tambora, Indonesia, in 1825 A.D.

The explosion sank the majority of the island. The resulting tsunami demolished Minoan settlements along the northern coast of Crete. Many scholars believe it was this disaster that inspired both Greek and Egyptian chroniclers--including our boy, Plato.
